our Toddler program
The Early Years covers the period of time the children spend in Nursery and Reception. Trident Preparatory School Kalumbila follow the guidelines of the Early Years Foundation Stage. The Early Years class is an integral part of the school and the children join in with all the school activities and events including assemblies and specialist PE lessons which include swimming in the summer months.
In the Early Years class Trident Preparatory School Kalumbila have created an environment which supports, encourages and stimulates the children to become independent learners.
In nursery and reception Trident Preparatory School Kalumbila follows the Early Years Foundation Stage. The school provides a safe and nurturing environment where everyone is encouraged to be unique, respectful and reach their full potential.
The Early Years Foundation Stage is based on four main principles:
Children learn the letter sounds and blend them together to read simple words and sentences. They will show an understanding of what they have read. They will learn to write simple words and sentences using their knowledge of letter sounds.
Children will learn to count reliably with numbers from 1-20, place them in order and find 1 more and 1 less. They will learn to add and take away with numbers up to 10 and solve simple problems. Children will use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money. They will recognise, describe and create patterns. They will learn to name and describe shapes.
Understanding the world
Children are taught to find out about similarities and differences in relation to objects, materials and living things, through topics including ‘Animals’ and ‘All about Me’. They will make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur. Children will talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how they might vary from one another.
Expressive arts and design
Children will use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. Children will sing songs, make music and explore a variety of musical instruments. All of the areas of learning and development are interconnected to the characteristics of effective learning, which are ‘playing and exploring’, ‘active learning’ and ‘creating and critical thinking’.
Your child will be assessed regularly using a combination of informal and formal observations and the EYFS criteria to measure their progress. These assessments will be ongoing or continuous throughout this phase of their education and will be recorded by class teachers.
Children are motivated learners happy to come to school, treat each other thoughtfully and with respect. At the school you will see colour, vibrancy, great teaching and coaching and a real sense of care for the individual. The Early Years are vitally important and aim to develop a sense of wonder and growing independence in every child.
