Description
Lycée Guebre-Mariam
The Lycée Guebre-Mariam was founded by the French secular mission in 1947. At the same time, France took over the concession of the railway between Djibouti and Addis Ababa. Several generations of children of French and Ethiopian railwaymen will be educated at the Lycée until the eighties.
Lycée Guebre-Mariam is located in the heart of Addis Ababa. Its 9000 m2 of buildings extend on a ground of 4 hectares and a half hectares granted by the Ethiopian authorities.
An international Franco-Ethiopian institution, he accompanied the installation of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the Organization of African Unity in Addis Ababa. Known throughout the country – the word “lycée” has also passed in the Amharic language – it has a threefold vocation: to educate French children, to contribute to the formation of the Ethiopian elite and to educate foreigners, mainly francophones. These missions impose a high standard of quality and respect for the values of the founders: openness to others, solidarity, dialogue between cultures and secularism.
Mixing pupils of about fifty different nationalities (*), the Lycée Guébré-Mariam school children of the many embassies of the diplomatic capital of Africa, the United Nations staff, the African Union, the European Delegation , French companies (Total, Sofrecom …) or Ethiopian Airlines (Ethiopian Airlines …), international organizations and finally Ethiopian civil servants, academics and traders.
