The Mauritanian Bank for International Trade was created in 1974 under the name of the BAAM (African Arab Bank in Mauritania) with a capital of 150 Million ouguiyas, which was distributed between the Central Bank of Mauritania (BCM) for 51% and the Arab African International Bank (AAIB), an Egyptian financial institution with 49%.
In 1984, the State’s shareholding was bought by the ABBAS family and the capital was raised to 500 million ouguiyas. The bank changes its name to become the BMAA (Banque Mauritanienne Arabe Africaine) and the ABBAS family takes over the management of the bank. Later, the BMAA negotiated the repurchase of the Egyptian participation.
In 1986, the bank changed its name and became BMCI. Since then, the bank has experienced continuous development thanks to the development of its human capital and the implementation of modern and innovative management tools.
The acquisition of the BICIS GAMBIA in 1997 and the 15% participation in the capital of the International Bank for Trade and Industry of Mali in 1998, confirm / clearly show the financial health of the institution and its development.
In the year 2000, the implementation of a vast process of overhauling procedures, the development of a prospective approach and the enhancement of human potential, herald a turning point in the history of BMCI. It is also the beginning of the renovation of the bank’s structure: overhaul of the IT system, development of remote banking tools, and an extension of the branch network (in 2002 the number of branches was 8, is 38 to 31.12.2014, the largest banking network in Mauritania).
Thanks to the implementation of a quality management system, BMCI becomes the first Mauritanian bank to obtain the quality certificate BVQI and ISO 9001 version 2000.
